A Gallery of Penelakut Art


	August Sylvester of the Penelakut Band began carving as a boy, inspired by his grandfather, Jimmy John, and his uncle, Stan Modeste. As a young man, he entered the carpenter trade, but when he retired he returned to his first love - carving. His work is both original and strongly traditional. Colour is important to him, and he gives a lot of thought to the choice of colour in his pieces. Apart from his work in carving, August Sylvester is working with his people in the task of reviving the Penelakut dialect and working out ways of recording and teaching it, since it was almost lost during the years of the "residential schools". A selection of August's work follows. Prices are approximate, as each new piece may vary somewhat in size or intricacy depending on the size and nature of the piece of wood.
